Virginia Schools Are Remarkable for Their Successes and their Funding Challenges
Virginia Schools received national recognition for many of its highly successful schools. Newsweek has released its top 5% list. The list includes 87 Virginia Schools. Eleven Virginia Schools were ranked amongst the top 100. The list also included two additional Virginia schools. Maggie Walker Governor’s School For Government and International Studies and Thomas Jefferson High School Science and Technology are two examples. Both schools were chosen for their higher SAT/ACT scores.
Virginia Schools achieved these results even though they spent $7,751 per student. This puts Virginia at the top of national spending. Virginia Schools has achieved some positive results. There are still many gaps and concerns. Virginia Schools have a large achievement gap for students of color, just like the rest of America. Students of color and those from other ethnicities scored lower on standardized exams than any other group. Socioeconomic factors can dramatically impact academic success.
This partnership is one of many ways Virginia Schools attempt to solve the problem. In 2003, Virginia’s Department of Education, ECMC, and Virginia ECMC Scholars Program emerged. Their goal was increase participation in postsecondary education for economically or otherly disadvantaged students. They wanted to challenge them to be better prepared in their senior and junior high school years.

Understanding American culture requires understanding the relationship between geography and human processes. Equality, diversity and individualism can appear at times to be opposites. They are an important part of American culture, identity and history. Both have had many disagreements in American history.
